How to wash your produce properly
I learned how to wash the produce properly at the HMI Nutrition School.
3% Food-grade hydrogen peroxide is a powerful antimicrobial substance that helps remove bacteria, tiny insects, and pesticides from vegetables and fruits.
Step 1. Wash and scrub your sink well. Alternatively, you can purchase a separate large basket or bin to soak all your veggies and fruits.
Step 2. Add your fruits and veggies to the sink and fill the sink with filtered water.
Step 3. Add about 1/4 to 1/2 cup of food-grade hydrogen peroxide solution of 3%.
Step 4. Let all the produce soak in the sink for about 15 min.
Step 5. Drain the water so all the dirt will sink to the bottom.
Step 6. Then, wash and scrub with a vegetable brush, especially all the fruits well and near their stems.
Also, soak all your herbs and leafy greens and use a salad spinner to remove excess water.
Important note: Soak all your citrus, too. Even if you don’t use lemon skin, for example, putting an unwashed lemon on a cutting board and then cutting it with a knife will cause contamination of the lemon itself from the dirty skin.
My tip for being efficient with all the washing: Once you return from grocery shopping, do not put all the produce in the fridge. Then, it is easy to get lazy and pull everything out again the next day, and you will end up washing each item just under the running water without proper soaking. So, I ensure that everything gets adequately washed before storing it in the fridge.
