Foods that Support Liver

At the HMI Nutrition School, we first learn about the importance of the liver in the detoxification process. The liver is the most crucial organ in our body. Here are some of the main functions of the liver:

  • Energy balance and regulation

  • Blood protein synthesis

  • Immune regulation

  • Supplies vital vitamins - Iron B12, Copper

  • Controls production and excretion of cholesterol

  • Metabolizes alcohol into a mild toxin

  • Stores iron

  • Maintains hormonal balance

  • Produces immune factors to fight infections

  • Regulates blood clotting

  • Produces bile (a digestive juice that dissolves into water content)

  • Makes cholesterol

  • Maintains a healthy digestive system

Efficient liver function is essential for the excretion of toxins (either internal or external). Malfunction of the liver leads to toxin and hormone accumulation in the body, which leads to disease.

Here are some foods that you can eat more to help support the liver’s function:

  • Cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, kale, cabbage, onion, Brussels

  • Garlic

  • Asparagus

  • Milk Thistle (in tea form)

  • Beets

  • Avocados

  • Brazil Nuts (maximum 3 nuts a day)

  • Ceylon cinnamon
