Charcoal Is Depledng You Off Numents
Growing up in Ukraine every household had charcoal pills.
We knew about its detoxifying properties for events like alcohol poisoning or food poisoning.
We only took it on occasion and mostly for curing harsh hangovers (I was never a heavy drinker, but I mixed up some cocktails a couple of times in my early 20s - I was glad I had charcoal handy). But that was it. The only couple of times I used it. Back home we knew that charcoal was a natural way to combat poisoning and not to be used daily. We kept it at home “just in case”.
The recent trend is all about adding charcoal to smoothies and juices. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And here is the problem with the consumption of charcoal so often. While it can absorb and extract the poison it is also a powerful binding agent for extracting all the good nutrients you have.
A great explanation from HMI Nutrition School @hminutritionschool is why you should not be drinking charcoal in your smoothies or juices.
“For starters, scientifically speaking, charcoal absorbs EVERYTHING. Think about that, adding charcoal to a smoothie??
Do YOU want the nutrients from the smoothie or do you want the charcoal to negate the nutrients for you first?
That’s not to mention that a fair amount of charcoal products are made from toxic coal. But even with the coconut versions, vital nutrients, including vitamins and minerals, will be bound and excreted with the charcoal.
Charcoal for detox? NO. Charcoal actually binds to phytonutrients that help aid your liver in the detoxification process.
Activated charcoal doesn’t discriminate between the healthful chemical components of food and any unwanted chemicals in the digestive system. And it bonds with vitamins like vitamin C, niacin, B6, thiamine (vitamin B1), and biotin, so it makes the food you consume less nutritious, not more.
For sure... if you have swallowed poison, charcoal may be your best bet along with calling 911. But for the sake of your liver and overall health, leave the charcoal in the medicine cabinet and out of your food”
